Preparing for a Fasting Blood Test: A Quick Guide
Fasting for a blood test generally means no food or drink other than plain water for 8–12 hours beforehand — most people find it easiest to fast overnight and book an early morning appointment.
Water is not just allowed, it's encouraged — staying hydrated makes it easier for our phlebotomists to find a vein and get your sample on the first try.
Black coffee, tea, chewing gum and even some vitamin supplements can affect certain results, so when in doubt, skip it until after your draw.
If you're diabetic or on medication that shouldn't be skipped, tell our staff before your test — we'll advise on the safest way to proceed rather than have you fast unsafely.
Each test page on our website lists its specific preparation requirements, so you can double check before you book.
